Us guys can be pretty daft...at least when it comes to our health. June 9th to June 15th was men's health week and it is as good a time as any for us men to take an honest look at ourselves and ask: Am I healthy? If the answer is "no", "not as healthy as I could be", or "Are you kidding - I played football in high school", it may be time to figure out how you can answer that question with a confident "yes". Here are some less-than-cheery facts about men's health that can hopefully act as a wake-up call.

Mediterranean Diet: Worth Taking a Second LookPosted by db@diet-blog.com - July 15, 2008 on 6:41 am | In Diet Blog | No CommentsIt's not terribly sexy. As diets go, it floats under the radar. It's not promoted heavily by any celebrities and if it were, it wouldn't get much press anyway. It's been permutated, repackaged and resold by diet book authors, and it quietly goes about its business preventing disease, prolonging life, cutting heart disease risk, dodging type II diabetes, curbing Alzheimer's and fighting allergies among other health-boosting attributes. The latest on the Mediterranean diet is its impact on cancer, with a recent study showing a 12% reduced risk by implementing just a couple of Mediterranean-inspired easy-to-make changes.

New Guidelines: Exercise More, not HarderPosted by db@diet-blog.com - July 14, 2008 on 6:59 am | In Diet Blog | No CommentsThis will likely be the battle cry from the U.S. Government when they release their policy on exercise later this year. William Kraus, a Duke University cardiologist and professor of medicine, is one of 13 fitness experts who helped compile information for the guidelines and summarizes the 638 pages of recommendations like this: Basically, don't sit around all day, and when you do move, you don't have to go at breakneck speed...."Whether you walk a mile, jog a mile or sprint a mile, it burns about 100 kilocalories," with the same health benefits.
