Calorie Restriction Weight Loss Program For Longevity

Posted by Former Fat Guy dot Com - December 12, 2007 on 9:17 pm | In Diet, Former Fat Guy.com, weight loss | Comments Off Since the 1930’s studies show (in rodents, dogs, cows, mice, worms, spiders and monkeys at least) that by restricting calories, we can extend life. Calorie restriction also reduces the incidence of virtually all diseases of aging such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, auto-immune disorders, neurological decline and diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. (source)

calorie restriction

No tests have yet to be done on man, however, in 1991, quite by accident, 8 scientists sealed themselves up in a giant airtight terrarium in the Arizona desert for a 2 year experiment on self sustaining ecosystems called Biosphere 2 and quite quickly found that indeed, they could not grow enough food to support themselves.

Roy Walford, the team’s physician, had been studying calorie restriction diets for a number of years and convinced his fellow scientists to give it a try.

I don’t really think they had a choice.

When their project ended and they exited the bubble …

tests proved them healthier in nearly every nutritionally relevant respect than when they’d gone in

Walford is the author of The Anti-Aging Plan: The Nutrient-Rich, Low-Calorie Way of Eating for a Longer Life--The Only Diet Scientifically Proven to Extend Your Healthy Years, but himself passing away at the age of 79 from Lou Gehrig’s disease. Ironically however, caloric restriction may have accelerated the course of ALS for Dr. Walford, as mice genetically engineered to develop ALS experience faster disease course and shorter lifespan when placed on a calorically restricted diet

I’ve done my own bit of calorie restriction as part of an experiment of ABCDE, Anabolic Burst Cycling of Diet and Exercise I did back in 2003. ABCDE is about two week cycles of diet and exercise. Two weeks of double caloric intake plus 1000 calories along with heavy lifting 3x a week and no cardio. This is immediately followed by two weeks of lower calories (in my case, 1800 per day) along with cardio and light weight training just enough to keep the muscle built during the first phase.

The idea behind ABCDE was presented to my by Bill Phillips during an interview he did with the ABCDE designer and I followed this program for 2 months. In a way, I experimented with a version of the calorie restriction program.

Calorie Restriction Test

What would it be like to follow this program for 2 months?

That’s the premise behind a story done by New York Magazine writer Julian Dibbell who did an entire 2 months on a calorie restricted diet. Her account leaves her 20 pounds lighter, an improved sex drive, dreams of immortality and, well, hungry.

I’m not sure if it’s worth it really.

I enjoy food and I always have.

I’d be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy the junk food I ate when I was younger, but have now come to love whole foods, imported beer and great wine.

I’ve often said that the reason I train so hard is because I like eating. I love training hard for all the benefits it provides both physically, mentally and emotionally and then I get to eat more too.

Is calorie restriction something you do or would consider doing? Read the Ultra Extreme Calorie Restriction Diet Test and make up your own mind. Personally, I’d like the freedom of earning my food because of the work I put in.

But hey, that’s just me.

Cutting calories doesn’t necessarily cut it anymore. Instead of starving your body, feed your body to a healthy slenderness.

If you’re new to whole foods, some recipes would certainly help in getting your started.

Soups are great meals to prepare in the cold winter months and can be easily packaged to take to work with you for a healthy meal.

Here are 5 whole food soup recipes you can create at home to provide essential nutrition for your weight loss program.

black bean soup

Black Bean Soup - When it comes to three basic categories of nourishment - protein, fiber and anti-oxidant related substances - few foods have as solid a nutritional profile as black beans.

african peanut stew

African Peanut Stew – Featuring Chickpeas (Garbonzo Beans). A prominent ingredient in Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, and East Indian dishes such as minestrones, hummus, and falafel, whole Chickpeas have a mild yet hearty flavor and keep their unique round shape when cooked. In addition to being a good source of protein and calcium, Chickpeas are especially high in iron.

barley lentil soup

Barley And Lentil Soup - Lentils are a delicious and nutritious food — high in protein, minerals, and fiber — that can be easily used as a substitute for other staples such as meat, pasta, or potatoes in soups and stews. Unlike dried beans, they require no soaking and cook relatively quickly.

pumpkin butternut squash curry soup

Pumpkin Butternut Squash Curry Soup - Butternut squash is a winter squash with a sweet nutty taste that can be steamed, roasted, pureed or mashed and used in any type of recipe. This Pumpkin Butternut Squash Soup is just right for the cold weather as the ginger gives it a bit of a kick.

broccoli lentil soup

Broccoli Lentil Soup With Roasted Pepper Coulis - The lentil is a brushy annual plant of the legume family, grown for its lens-shaped seeds. With 26% protein, lentil is the vegetable with the highest level of protein other than soybeans, and because of this it is a very important part of the diet in many parts of the world, and especially South Asia.

Technically, these are soup recipes and stew recipes, but I’m sure you’ll love them anyway.

[Rob's Note:] I think getting hung up on the past, what we were, what we used to do, be or have can get us down. It's not about what happened yesterday, last week, month or year, but about what we choose to do today and tomorrow that makes us who we really are.

McDonalds Advertising On Report Cards - Get Good Grades - Get a Happy Meal!

mcdonalds school report cards

About 20 million children in the United States qualify as overweight or clinically obese, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and now 37 schools in Seminole County, Fla. are contributing to it through a corporate-sponsorship program that awards high-achieving students with McDonald Happy Meals.

The "report card incentive," as the program is known, is explained on the front of specially produced envelopes bearing the image of Ronald McDonald and in which the report cards for every student in the county's 37 elementary schools are sent home.

The incentives are described as "food prizes," and a report card of all A's and B's or an attendance record blemished by just two absences is enough to earn a student a free Happy Meal.

John Banzhaf III, a law professor George Washington University says
The next thing the school should offer is cigarettes and alcohol. … Why aren't schools selling Hustler or Playboy magazines out of vending machines too? Schools shouldn't be selling things that endanger children just to make a buck.

mcdonalds report card

The Campaign For a Commercial-Free Childhood released a press release demanding that McDonalds immediatly stop advertising on children's report cards

this promotion takes in-school marketing to a new low. It bypasses parents and targets children directly with the message that doing well in school should be rewarded by a happy meal
says Susan Linn, the director of CCFC and psychologist at Judge Baker Children's Center.

the press release states the Happy Meal promotion explicitly mentions cheeseburgers, French fries, and soft drinks as options. Happy Meals featured on the report card can contain as many 710 calories, 28 grams of fat, or 35 grams of sugar.

one parent was quoted as saying that her daughter worked so hard to get good grades and now thinks she has earned a happy meal. The parent has to be the "bad guy" and explain that McDonalds is not the kind of food that they eat.

sleep deprivation and weight gain: How does it happen?

Posted by Former Fat Guy dot Com - December 6, 2007 on 7:12 pm | In Former Fat Guy.com | Comments Off sleep deprivation and weight gainBy Tom Venuto, CSCS, NSCA-CPT
www.BurnTheFatbook.com

You've probably seen the magazine articles or news blurbs that say, "lack of sleep can make you fat!"

There is a lot of confusion however, about the mechanism.

It's not uncommon for people to believe there is a cause and effect relationship between sleep deprivation and weight gain.

However, if that were the case, then you would always gain weight if you slept less even if your food intake stayed the same.

To the contrary, if you sleep less AND eat less, rest assured you will lose weight.

If you are awake more hours and you are more active during those increased waking hours, again, rest assured you will lose weight.

Almost all the research on this subject has been cross sectional and therefore does not prove causality.

We Eat More When We're Sleep Deprived

Research suggests that the likely explanation is a disruption in hormones which can affect appetite and food intake so you are more likely to eat more when you are sleep deprived.

For example, a new study published in the December 2007 issue of "Nutrition Research Reviews" says that sleep deprivation can reduce leptin (the anti starvation hormone, also known as an anorexigenic hormone) and increase ghrelin, a stomach hormone that increases hunger.

This makes total sense. Think about it:

  1. less sleep equals more awake time

  2. More awake time equals greater energy needs

  3. Greater energy needs can be satisfied by increasing hunger hormones

  4. Leptin and ghrelin are appetite-stimulating hormones

The human body is incredible and amazingly self-regulating, isnt it?

In addition, when hormones are out of balance, that can affect nutrient paritioning.

Nutrient paritioning refers to where the energy comes from when you have a calorie deficit - fat or lean tissue - and where the energy goes when you are in a calorie surplus - fat or lean tissue.

So, when partitioning hormones are messed up due to sleep deprivation, it's entirely possibly that you are more likely to add fat (not muscle) when in a surplus and lose muscle (not fat) when in a deficit.

This is similar to what happens during stress. Stress also does not "cause" fat gain, but it certainly correlates to fat gain, for similar reasons. Imagine what happens when you are stressed AND sleep deprived?

Some people seem to get by with less sleep than others. I know many people, myself included, who excel physically on 6-7 hours a night, so there is certainly a variation in sleep needs from person to person.

Developing Good Sleeping Habits

Developing sleep habits that promote deep, high quality sleep may also reduce sleep needs an hour or two. This includes:

  • going to bed and waking up at the same time every night

  • getting to sleep early and awake early to maximize night time sleeping hours and daylight waking hours

  • sleeping in a dark room

  • avoiding alcohol and stimulants prior to bedtime

  • reducing stress and exercising regularly

However, in light of past research and the new data that was just published, if in doubt, it's surely better to err on the side of a little more sleep than a little less sleep, if more muscle and less fat is your goal.

Get Kids Vaccinated Or Go To Jail?

Posted by Former Fat Guy dot Com - December 1, 2007 on 12:57 am | In Former Fat Guy.com | Comments Off
get kids vaccinated or go to jail
Fox News, USA Today, and a number of other major media outlets reported this week on news from Maryland where dozens of parents were notified by a district court that either they vaccinate their children or go to jail. The media reports have caused a lot of confusion around the U.S. among parents who have chosen not to vaccinate their children for certain illnesses based on concerns about possible negative impacts from the vaccines themselves. While the mainstream medical community claims vaccines are safe and effective, some people blame immunizations for a rise in autism and other medical problems. In actuality, there are no federal laws requiring vaccinations. Providing schools with vaccine exemption forms for your child is all that is required by federal law. If you have thoroughly researched the vaccine issue and have decided one or more vaccines may not be right for your children, follow this link to a website where you can download exemption forms for your state or country.

3 Healthy Choices That Aren’t So Healthy

Posted by Former Fat Guy dot Com - November 23, 2007 on 3:07 pm | In Former Fat Guy.com | Comments Off A mens health article begins with the premise that if a product is labeled healthy, that it must be good for you.

They begin with this logic:

1. Fat-free foods are healthy. 2. Skittles are fat-free. 3. Therefore, Skittles are healthy. Make sense? Of course not. But it's exactly the type of reasoning that food manufacturers want you to use.

My girlfriend and I long stated that just because a product is for sale in an organic grocery, that it is not necessarily good for you. We shopped at a local organic grocery that was eventually bought out by a chain. The original store, "The Big Fresh" had a policy that it would not carry any genetically modified foods or anything with artificial sweeteners in it. The new chain, Planet Organic does not carry the same policy. I'm not saying that it's all bad, because it isn't. I still shop there, however, I'm reading labels much more carefully.

We have been bombarded with "fat free" marketing for a couple of decades now and as most of us have learned, "fat free" simply means "higher sugar" and is designed (my opinion), to keep you fat. There's a lot of money in the weight loss industry, and any product that calls itself a "weight loss food" while secretly keeping you fat, keeps you on the treadmill of dieting.

The Mens Health article has you consider other "Healthy Foods" that aren't healthy.

baked beans

1. Baked Beans

The upside: Beans are packed with fiber, which helps keep you full and slows the absorption of sugar into your bloodstream.

The downside: The baked kind are typically covered in a sauce made with brown and white sugars. And because the fiber is located inside the bean, it doesn't have a chance to interfere with the speed at which the sugary glaze is digested. Consider that 1 cup of baked beans contains 24 g sugar: That's about the same amount in 8 ounces of regular soda.

The healthy alternative: Red kidney beans, packed in water. You get the nutritional benefits of legumes, but without the extra sugar. They don't even need to be heated: Just open the can, rinse thoroughly, and serve. Try splashing some hot sauce on top for a spicy variation.

I've eaten baked beans from the can in the past, but I always drained the sauce from them. Yes, a lot of people enjoy baked beans and consider them healthy and tasty. Well, try them without the sauce and see how you feel about continueing with your "healthy choice".

granola bars

2. Granola Bars

The upside: Granola is made with whole oats, a nutritious food that's high in fiber.

The downside: The oats are basically glued together with ingredients like high-fructose corn syrup, honey, and barley malt -- all of which quickly raise blood sugar.

The healthy alternative: Consider or , both made from whole foods, contain complex carbohydrates and real fruit, and the Sunbar containing only 3 grams of fat with soluble and insoluble fibers. Having Sunrider Nuplus or Sunbars fills the nutritional gaps in your diet and reduces hunger almost immediately because it provides your body with vitamins, minerals and enzymes from a real food source.

pasta-salad

3. Pasta Salad

The upside: Most pasta-salad recipes include a variety of fresh vegetables.

The downside: The main ingredient is white-flour pasta, a close relative of white bread.

The healthy alternative: Egg salad has no impact on blood sugar, and a University of Connecticut review reports that there is no connection between egg consumption and heart disease.

Excuse me, but when did Pasta Salad become a "healthy choice"? Did I miss something? It's always been white flower and has always left the eater feeling burnt out a few minutes after eating due to insulin response. How can someone not recognize how a food makes them feel?

Stay away from pasta salad.

I cant begin to enforce the importance of reading labels and recognizing the sugar and fiber content and knowing how it affects your health.

Milk From Cloned Cows - Anyone?

Posted by Former Fat Guy dot Com - November 16, 2007 on 7:36 pm | In Former Fat Guy.com | Comments Off

The Senate is still wrangling over the 2007-2012 Farm Bill. One new consumer-friendly amendment, vehemently opposed by the biotech industry, would force the FDA to reverse its current controversial regulations on milk from cloned animals. Despite widespread opposition from the OCA and other consumer groups, the FDA has approved the commercialization of milk from cloned animals as "safe" and will not require labels. The newly proposed Mikulski amendment to the 2007 Farm Bill would require the FDA to place a temporary moratorium on cloned milk and examine its potential health hazards for animals and humans. We have updated our Farm Bill alert to address this issue.

Benefits of Being Vegetarian - Part 3

Posted by Former Fat Guy dot Com - November 15, 2007 on 5:57 pm | In Former Fat Guy.com | Comments Off
benefits of being vegetarian
Part 3 in a series of "benefits of being vegetarian" in honor of this week of the Vegetarian Challenge put forth by Toronto vegetarian group to inspire non-vegetarians into trying the lifestyle and learning more about vegetarianism. Some benefits include reducing your carbon footprint, saving money, reducing cholesterol, lower blood pressure, improving sleep, reducing stress, reducing body fat etc. There are a lot of reasons to take on a vegetarian lifestyle.

Today's benefit of being a vegetarian:

You can snack all day long and never crack 1200 calories making weight loss easy and effortless

There are virtually NO calories in vegetarian foods and it’s impossible to eat too much or gain weight. It’s the same reason that there are no bodybuilders that can gain muscle being vegetarian and why vegetarians all look so scrawny.

Completely not true

It’s not only possible to gain muscle choosing a vegetarian lifestyle, it’s easy to keep it as well.

Toby Maquire gained enough muscle eating a vegetarian diet to get the physique Spider Man is known for. The director said “He had become a sledgehammer of an action star.”

Christian Bale weighed 220 pounds during the shooting of his movie “Batman Begins”. Oh ya, Christian is a vegetarian.

Vegetarian Bodybuilder Bill Pearl

vegetarian bodybuilder bill pearl

Most impressively, 5 Time Mr Universe Bill Pearl, who trains 5 days a week into his late 70’s, has been a vegetarian since he was 39.

In my interview with Bill Pearl, we discuss his vegetarian diet, how he trains and his history of being in 5 Mr Universe competitions. Bill pearl is probably the most famous vegetarian bodybuilder to date.

There is more than enough protein in a vegetarian lifestyle to provide amino acids for the building of muscle. Protein is abundant in all nuts, seeds and beans, as well as all vegetables and grains. I gained over 50 pounds of lean muscle on a vegetarian diet along with Sunrider whole foods.

Dark Chocolate Part Of A Vegetarian Lifestyle

Posted by Former Fat Guy dot Com - November 15, 2007 on 5:26 pm | In Former Fat Guy.com | Comments Off
dark chocolate and vegetarians
Should dark chocolate be part of a vegetarian of vegan lifestyle? Sure why not?

A report in the journal of the American medical association from 2003 says that dark chocolate indeed does offer antioxidants that help lower blood pressure in those with moderate high blood pressure.

And of course, the findings show that milk interferes with the absorption of those antioxidants (as it does with all nutrition of course), so avoid chocolate with milk in it. Actually, just plain ok?

In a report in a 2003 copy of nature, Mauro Serafini, PhD says
Our findings indicate that milk may interfere with the absorption of antioxidants from chocolate ... and may therefore negate the potential health benefits that can be derived from eating moderate amounts of dark chocolate.

So eating chocolate isn’t so bad for us. Choose dark chocolate over milk chocolate and choose a good Cabernet Sauvignon to go with it.

My Advice, just as you should choose the the best red wine, choose the best dark chocolate.

Chocolate, good for vegetarians and meat eaters alike. In moderation.

Beginner Weight Training Program

Posted by Former Fat Guy dot Com - November 15, 2007 on 2:46 pm | In Bodybuilding, Former Fat Guy.com | Comments Off I sent out an email to my subscribers asking for their opinion about what it is they wanted to learn more about.

It was overwhelmingly in favor of these top 6 items

1. Weight Loss Information
2. Weight Loss Tips
3. Fitness and Exercise Information
4. Exercise and Fitness Tips
5. Natural Health Information
6. Whole Food Recipes and Cooking Tips

Well, I’m happy to see those results because they’re all related. Natural health principle’s including whole foods, improving digestion and elimination, reducing stress and becoming more active in both weight bearing exercise as well as cardiovascular exercise all result in a healthy lean body.

Cleansing and Detoxification came in #7 on the list and will be a primary focus of my new book Fat Loss Fundamentals.

Of the 25 questions I asked, it’s #8 that is why I’m writing this post.

I’ve recently come across a great resource that I’d like to offer you for free.

There is no investment except for that of your time, which is required but I think you'll agree that anything valuable is worth your time and effort and than includes the body you want.

If it's a fit, lean, healthy body, then this is for you

When people first approach me and ask me for assistance in their weight or health and want to know what to do about it, I usually reply with a question:

"What do YOU think you need to do?"

Most people already know the answer.

It’s a change in lifestyle including beginning an exercise program and a change in eating habits from processed foods to whole foods.

In the survey I included a question asking about what sort of exercise and fitness
information my subscribers wanted.

I had no idea where they were at in their weight training program,so I asked.

I asked three specific questions ...

  1. Exercise programs and examples for beginners?
  2. Exercise programs and examples for intermediate?
  3. Exercise programs and examples for advanced?

The 8th most important thing they wanted to know about, of 25 questions asked was

Beginner Weight Training Exercise Program and Examples

no fat lies beginner weight training program

What if I told you that I could offer you a 7 day intro to a beginner weight training program, with no catches, that you can repeat at no cost and zero risk?

What if the 7 day course included pictures and videos of the 15 exercises, showing you how to perform them?

What if the 7 day course included ready to print workout journals that you can use over and over again at no cost?

What if this zero cost 7 day intro came with a shopping list taking you by the hand and guiding you through the best proteins, carbohydrates, fruits, veggies and fats for you to stock your cupboards with?

If you had access to the exercise videos, the exercise logs, the shopping list listing all the fruits, veggies, fats and proteins, would you make use of it?

My friend Rich Tweten is a personal trainer from Vancouver who
took his No Fat Lies 90 Day Rapid and Permanent Fat Loss Solution program and paired it down to the very basics for this FREE 7 day introduction so that you could take action and get started
right now.

You’ve heard me talking about the movie The Secret a lot.

Not only have I seen it numerous times, but I’ve worked personally with at least 2 of the teachers. I even ran a contest giving away 4 copies of the book "the Attractor Factor" by one of the teachers, Joe Vitale.

The secret to "The Secret" is taking action.

You put out your intention to the Universe, God, whatever you want to call it, then when presented with an opportunity, your only duty is to Jump, to take action!

Well, you asked for beginner weight training information and now you’ve got the opportunity.

I just want to repeat it again, that there is "no charge"

It's Free.

Rich has coached many clients including Kristen Daltan who starred in Stephen King’s "the dead zone" and played Jack Nicholson’s "girl" in the 2006 movie "The Departed" which won an oscar for Best Picture and writes a column for Fitness Experts, a fitness magazine distributed across Canada.

In short, he knows his stuff and is completely dedicated to his clients getting results.

Let me summarize what it is you’re getting in this beginner weight training program:

  • 15 videos showing the exercises and how to perform them
  • Exercise Journals - Ready to print and use over and over
  • Examples workouts
  • The Ultimate shopping list

and....

  • Three 20 minute cardio burn workouts

That’s 7 days of workouts all at zero cost.

ZERO!

Wait, 3 days of weight training and 3 days of cardio burn workouts does not equal 7 days of workouts.

What’s up with that?

The 7th day is a secret. You’ll have to get the course to find out what happens on the 7th day, but let me say this:

If you’re subscribed to my blog, you’ll have heard that Jessie began a 6 day a week weight training and cardio program from scratch knowing nothing about exercise, food or the gym. In fact, she was afraid of the gym, but she busted through that fear because she knew she had to take action.

She took her 4 kids for a day trip to two local gyms and then bought a membership.

She’s dropping between 2 and 4 pounds a week steady, week in and week out and writing about her experience on my blog.

If Jessie can do this with 4 kids, what’s stopping you?

You’ve asked for this and now you’ve got your opportunity to take action

There is NOTHING stopping you.

No Cost

Zero Risk

It's all FREE.

If this is what you want, then this is time to take action on it and get started.

One of my favorite quotes is by Johan Von Goeth 1749 – 1832

Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness, concerning all acts of initiative (and creation). There is one elementary truth the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one's favor all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance which no man could have dreamed would have come his way. Take Action - Get The 90 Day No Fat Lies Intro Weight Training Program For Free

PS. a subscriber recently asked me a question about why I haven’t written my own book yet and about being able to trust the people I refer. I would not refer them if I didn’t know them, their integrity or their ability to put forth a product that they stand behind and that I know works. You’re trusting me and I’m not about to blow that trust by offering a shit product.

My passion is natural health and fitness. I love working out and I see it’s incredible importance in getting the body you truly desire. I'm not passionate about writing about it however, so that’s where Rich comes in. He’s passionate about it and I don’t have to re-invent the wheel. Get the 7 day primer . Take action

PPS: Rich’s 7 Day Beginner Workout Primer is almost exactly the same routine I began with myself after I lost 300 pounds, but I had to create my own journals rather than having them pre-made for me like Rich does

Benefits Of Being Vegetarian Number 2

benefits of being vegetarian
This week is the week, I'm doing a series of Benefits Of Being Vegetarian.

Number 2 on my list:
You're The Freak At The Party

Normally something you would want to avoid, in this case, your eating habits and choice of food groups (or lack of food groups) is always reason for starting a conversation.

Kinda shy? Want to meet that hot chick or guy over by the snack table? Easy, just go up and say "I'm vegetarian - what kind of vegetables do they have here?"

One of two things will occur. You'll either get a smile from him or her or suddenly become outcast and kicked out of the party.

Either way, you started a conversation and are getting a lot of attention.

carrie underwood sexiest vegetarian
Now imagine a party with Carrie Underwood at that same snack table. Imagine saying the same thing again "I'm vegetarian - what kind of vegetables do they have here?" and you'll probably get a different response. Carrie was voted sexiest vegetarian in 2005 and again this year 2007. She may very well say to you "lets blow this party and go back to my place".

Slightly different response. Never be afraid to open your mouth and ask where the veggies are, you may meet the perfect woman.

How Important Is Self Confidence?

Posted by Former Fat Guy dot Com - November 14, 2007 on 12:11 pm | In Bodybuilding, Former Fat Guy.com | Comments Off By Zach Bashore
author of No BS Bodybuilding aka Bodybuilding for the Average Joe

Having high self-confidence is important because it gives you the mind set that what you are doing is the right way and nobody's negative opinion about you can change that. Most high levels of self confidence comes from past successes and also the ability to believe in oneself. In order to perform at your highest potential, high self confidence must be in place.

Every successful person has a plan, a plan to become better at whatever they do in the future. That is where high self-confidence comes in handy. You don't want to start the day not knowing what you want out of it. Instead, you should be controlling every minute, using that time as a means for improvement.

There is a downside to being successful and that is being expected to perform at that same great level at all times. This takes maturity on your part but you should use this as motivation. When great things are expected from you, expect more respect from others at work, home, and even social outings. People will start to trust you and come to you if they want positive advice. It is one of the greatest feelings in the world knowing that you are expected to be the best because if you fail, you at least have the ability to rebound and not make the same mistakes again.

Developing high self-confidence takes a lot of practice and the rate of improvement will depend on the individual. Anyone can increase their confidence levels by doing something small that they are good at. Just be careful not to jump the gun and try doing too much. This will leave you with nothing and the worst confidence killer you can think of.

Benefits Of Being Vegetarian

benefits of being vegetarian
In honor of the Vegetarian Challenge, I thought I'd start some "benefits of being vegetarian" and allow readers to add some of their own.

Today's "benefit of being vegetarian" :

Better Poo

As any vegetarian can relate to, all the fiber from a vegetarian diet contributes to extreme regularity.

My buddy dirk says "there's nothing like a good poo in the morning to start your day off right"

I agree

My 90 Percent Vegetarian Diet

Posted by Former Fat Guy dot Com - November 13, 2007 on 10:05 pm | In Former Fat Guy.com | Comments Off I recently got a reply to one of my posts from a reader who was so happy to have me back as a vegetarian and expressing her sadness at having lost me a few years ago (lost to vegetarianism). I laughed, in a good way. It’s nice to have a great group of people of like mind making a conscious decision about their health and the effect on our planet.

I’m not 100% vegetarian and I don’t promote 100% vegetarian though.

I should be clear that I’m not against being vegetarian either.

I’m not in a place anymore to be completely against animal protein any more but rather feel that it’s all about eating healthy and that eating being easy and effortless.

What I do promote and you’ll be hearing about more and more is about a 90% - 10% vegetarian – meat based diet. I still don’t have a name for it really and it’s not 90% vegetarian per day, its more in line with cave man eating, that is 5 to 7 days ore more of vegetarian / vegan meals followed by a couple of days of a diet plentiful in vegetables, nuts and seeds along with good quality lean meats such as Bison, elk or free range chicken, then a return to vegetarian for a week or so.

Here’s a recent meal I prepared and photographed.

”mixed

This is a very simple yet nutritious meal of brown rice with mixed green’s consisting of Kale, Kai Lan (or Gai Lan) which is a Chinese Broccoli or Chinese Kale and some green beans for good measure. Kale is highly nutritious, being very high in beta carotene, vitamin K, vitamin A, vitamin C, lutein and reasonably rich in calcium. It’s one of my favorite leafy greens that I try and eat multiple times on a daily basis.

Mixed Greens With Garlic and Ginger

1 or 2 stalks kale
1 stalk kai lan
green beans
2 cloves garlic
1/2 inch ginger root
Sesame Oil

Steam Kale, Kai Lan and Green Beans in a steamer. While steaming the green beans, put a Tablespoon of sesame oil into a frying pan and heat. Slice the garlic and ginger into the pan and fry for 2 or 3 minutes.

After the greens have steamed for about 5 to 7 minutes, remove from steamer and put into frying pan. Toss the greens in the garlic, ginger, sesame mixture until coated.
Remove from heat and put on plate with whole grain brown rice.

Personally, I spray on my brown rice and Kale and recommend the same. To complete the meal, consider adding a small portion of lentil Dahl to the meal.

My girlfriend Darlene is a professional photographer. She’s been taking all the photographs of the meals we’re preparing for her posts on my other blog. This photo however, I took. I prepared it and I took the photo, so I’m happy to have it posted here. It says “her view photography” on it and in a discussion I’m having right now as I type this, Darlene says “it’s my camera, it was taken in my house, so it’s going to have my name on it”. lol

I’ve been on every side of the coin, having had a diet of no nutritional value filled with junk foods, fried foods, lots of coffee and pop, then a vegetarian diet followed by Vegan. After being vegetarian for 12 years and vegan for two, I brought meat back into my program. At one point it was 50% or better of calories with some veggies sprinkled in for color.
Currently, I’m following a 90 – 10 diet with 5 to 7 days or more of vegetarian based meals and then a day or two of meat.

What I’m doing is simply increasing whole foods with a focus on the higher nutritional value foods like green leafy vegetables, nuts and seeds.

Then I get some Bison or Elk and make a meatloaf which lasts about two to three meals, or have some free range chicken or feel free to eat some chicken when I’m out. What I’m not doing is stressing about it. I’m eating higher on the nutritional scale and doing it for a number of days in a row, then adding in good quality lean meats.

I’m not vegetarian and I’m not eating a meat based diet.

I am eating a whole food diet focusing on higher quality nutrition and becoming more alkaline. If it turns out that I go a week or two without meat, I’m cool with that and so is my colon.

Now, this being the vegetarian challenge week, I am 100% vegetarian this week.

Other Vegetarian Recipes

Here are some previous recipes that Darlene and I have made over the past few months

The photographs you see that accompany the recipes are the ones WE took of the recipe, just after we served it and immediately before we ate it. Yes, we eat these meals ourselves. (we've been asked)

Vegetarian Challenge Week Starts Today

vegetarian challenge
Today is day one of the Vegetarian Challenge posed by Toronto based veg group. The idea was posed by Christine (One Smart Cookie) a member of my , who recently joined my girlfriends and mine Sunrider Group. She’s making changes in her eating habits and including more green smoothies, Sunrider foods and transitioning from a meat based diet to a vegetable based diet.

Christine found this vegetarian challenge website and then started a facebook group by the same name.

The Veggie Challenge offers prizes, a once a day email with meal suggestions and product recommendations to help keep you on track. From the testimonials on their website, there have been a number of people who have made the transition to vegetarianism based on this challenge.

One such testimonial from Wayne

I had been thinking about going vegetarian for a long time but it was this challenge that made me consider it seriously.
– Wayne, 30's, from meat-centered to mostly vegan

And another from a teen who shocked her family when she started eating better:

My family was absolutely shocked that I had decided to go vegan. They kept telling me that I wouldn't get enough nutrients and would die of malnutrition.
– Monica, teen, from vegetarian to vegan

It always amuses me that those who choose to eat more nutritiously are criticized by those who are simply guessing about it.

Trust me, when you eat more vegetables and especially more leafy green vegetables, you’re eating better than most people. Vegetarians are just as concerned about carnivores as carnivores are about vegetarians, however, in my opinion, vegetarians are better informed when it comes
